We’re big Only Fools & Horses fans. Gold-on-every-weekend fans.

So when we booked Amsterdam, the canals and museums were great and all…

But…

We were there for To Hull and Back.

Bucket list stuff? Err, absolutely.

We’ve now been twice (latest trip July 2025), and yes — we did say the quotes out loud as we saw John from our window over the North Sea. Yes, other passengers probably thought we were weird.

No regrets.

Van Kleefe’s Office

This is the spot.

Van Kleefe’s office is where the whole thing kicks off — the dodgy diamonds, Boycie’s fake notes, and the moment you realise this isn’t your standard Peckham wheeler-dealer job.

You’ll need to look out for it. No dramatic signage. No big “Diamond Exchange” banner. Just a normal Amsterdam canal house quietly minding its business.

Leggit: Aluminium Bridge (Aluminiumbrug)

The Aluminiumbrug pops up during the iconic “Leggit!” chase scene — easily one of the best bits of the episode.

It’s only on screen briefly, but if you know, you know.

In real life, it’s a small white drawbridge over one of Amsterdam’s canals.

📍 Location: Aluminiumbrug, 1012 CP Amsterdam

Go early if you want a clean photo — it’s central, so it gets busy.

And yes… you’ll hear “Leggit!” in your head the entire time.

de Bijenkorf

You can’t miss it in the episode.

Del, Rodney and Uncle Albert pass de Bijenkorf on their way to Van Kleefe’s office — and somehow it still looks almost exactly the same as it did in 1985.

Which is rare, because Amsterdam’s evolved loads since then.

It’s big. Grand. Smack bang on Dam Square. And once you clock it in the episode, you’ll spot it instantly in real life.

Stand there for a minute and picture them marching past like they’re about to pull off the deal of the century.

Spoiler: they weren’t.

Walter Suskindbrug Bridge

You’ll spot this one shortly after Rodney asks where they actually are.

Uncle Albert confidently delivers:

“We’re on the Noordzeekanaal, Rodney. It leads right into the heart of Amsterdam.”

Classic Albert. Zero hesitation. Maximum authority… despite having no bloody idea.

In reality, the Walter Süskindbrug sits over the Amstel and looks far more peaceful than the episode makes everything feel. It’s a clean, white bridge with that proper Amsterdam canal backdrop — bikes, boats, and that calm-before-the-chaos vibe.

📍 Location: Amstel 49, 1011 PW Amsterdam

It’s not the loudest filming spot on this list, but it’s one fans will recognise straight away.

And yes… we absolutely quoted Albert while standing there.

Dam Square Amsterdam

You’ll see Dam Square just before they head towards Van Kleefe’s office.

No pigeons exploding into the sky.

No dramatic 80s soundtrack.

Just modern-day Amsterdam doing its thing. It’s not often you’ll find it this quiet, to be fair.

But it’s still one of those “ahhh, there it is” moments when you’re watching the episode back later. Traipsing past, doing their thing.

Dam Square — street performers, tourists, trams, scams, chaos. It probably hasn’t changed much in spirit since 1985.

📍 Location: Dam, 1012 NP Amsterdam.

Groenburgwal (Leggit)

Now this one took some proper digging.

A big chunk of the “Leggit!” scene was filmed around Groenburgwal — but piecing it together isn’t exactly straightforward.

Especially when Van Kleef’s is over the side of the city.

The footage is 80s quality. Grainy. And Amsterdam has changed a fair bit since then. Buildings restored. Shopfronts updated. Bridges repainted.

So lining up exact angles? Not easy.

We used a mix of OFAH.net, freeze-framing the episode, and squinting at street signs like absolute weirdos. Is it this corner? Is it that one?

And then…

We found the bugger…

📍 Coordinates: 52°22’05.3″N 4°53’50.7″E

Right by Staalmeestersbrug.

When you stand there, it clicks instantly. Same view. Same framing. Just fewer panicked Trotters sprinting through shot.

Ajax!

This is one of the most recognisable frames in the episode.

The shot looking down the canal from Staalmeestersbrug — narrow houses, still water, proper postcard Amsterdam.

In the episode, it flashes past quickly.

And when you line it up against the episode, it’s one of those proper fan moments where you think:

“They stood right here.”

If you’re heading over anyway (and not just on a diamond-smuggling pilgrimage), Amsterdam is ridiculously easy to explore on foot.

Most of these filming spots are within walking distance of each other. No mad transport planning needed. Just comfy trainers and a loose plan.

One thing we would recommend looking at is the I Amsterdam City Card.

If you’re doing a few museums or planning to use public transport, it can actually work out as decent value. We saved around £40 on our last trip — and we weren’t exactly sprinting around ticking boxes.

Three included attractions and it’s usually paid for itself.

Where To Stay

We’ve stayed in a couple of different spots over our trips.

Pricey? Yes.
Breakfast? Elite & you can get take-out options, which saves a good few quid.

If we’re splashing out, we’d go back in a heartbeat. They absolutely nail the small touches, and the location is spot on.

On the more sensible end, we’ve stayed at Ibis Amsterdam Centraal Station.

Not flashy, not budget Bill. But practical. And if you get the right room, the views are unreal.

Watching the trams roll in and the city light up at night was one of those cool moments. Proper “sit by the window with a drink and be nosey” vibes.

Final Thoughts

This wasn’t about rewriting a classic episode. And if I did? Del would have never chucked that money away.
