All-inclusive resorts divide opinion.

Some people love and swear by them (like us). Others think they’re overpriced buffet factories with a sunburn.

So… are all-inclusive resorts actually worth it?

Annoying answer: it depends — mainly on where you’re going and what you want from the trip.

In this guide, we’ll break down:

  • when all-inclusive is a bargain
  • when DIY makes more sense
  • short-haul vs long-haul (massive difference)
  • and how we choose without ending up with regretti-spaghetti.

If you’re trying to avoid overpaying, this’ll sort you out.

And if Mexico’s the plan, don’t wing it, we’ve covered tipping and the small stuff properly – Tipping at all-inclusive resorts in Mexico.

  • Want zero planning and fixed costs? Yes.
  • Short-haul Europe with cheap flights? Maybe not.
  • Love exploring all day and rarely eat at the hotel? Probably DIY.

Location Makes or Breaks an All-Inclusive Holiday

Here’s the bit most people don’t talk about properly: Location changes everything.

An all-inclusive in Mexico or the Caribbean?
Different league.

An all-inclusive in parts of Europe?
Sometimes feels like you’re paying extra for things that should’ve been included in the first place.

We’ve seen it ourselves — pool bar shuts early, á la carte restaurants cost extra, premium drinks aren’t really “included”, and suddenly your “all-inclusive” isn’t feeling very… all-inclusive. It also kinda defeats the biggest selling point in AI holidays, which is that your customer can’t be arsed with the admin or the faff. Not to add more.

That doesn’t mean Europe’s bad. It just means you need to know what you’re booking.

When people say, “All-inclusive isn’t worth it,” nine times out of ten, they booked the wrong country for the experience they wanted.

Big difference.

Short Haul: Cheap Flights & Flexibility

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Short-haul all-inclusive can work… but it’s not always the slam dunk people think it is.

In Europe, flights are ridiculously cheap.
We’ve flown to Spain for under £25 each, return. From our local airport, 10 minutes down the road.

When flights are that cheap, suddenly you’ve got options.

You can:

  • Pick a better-located hotel
  • Eat out somewhere actually decent
  • Wander into town without feeling trapped inside a resort

And because you’re booking separately, you’ve usually got flexibility. Free cancellation. Pay at the property. No panic if you change your mind.

That’s a big deal.

A lot of short-haul packages only cover a small selection of hotels. So if location matters to you (it should), DIY can win.

That said…

You can still find some great package deals all over Europe. You just need to check what’s included before booking out of excitement.

The key? Compare. Always compare.

One week DIY wins. The next week the package smashes it. Prices move constantly.

There’s no ego in it — just check both and go with the best value.

Long Haul: Best Bang For Your Buck

If we’re talking long-haul — Mexico, Caribbean, etc. — it’s a different game.

This is where all-inclusive really starts making sense.

Flights alone can sting. You’re often looking at £700–£900 per person return to somewhere like Cancun. And that’s before bags, transfers, and all the other bits airlines love charging for.

Now add:

  • Hotel
  • Transfers
  • Food
  • Drinks
  • Entertainment
  • Activities

It adds up quickly.

That’s why we always compare package vs DIY before booking long-haul.

Here’s a real example from our May trip:

Package (TUI) – 14 nights

  • Flights
  • 20kg luggage each
  • Transfers
  • Hotel
  • £3565 total

DIY

  • Flights + baggage
  • Transfers
  • Same hotel
  • £4340 total

In this case, the package saved us over £700.

If you are pondering when to go, keep timing in mind — things like weather, seaweed season and price fluctuations matter a lot. We’ve broken down the best time to visit Riviera Maya & Cancun if that’s on your radar.

If you’re pricing up Mexico, it’s worth checking out any deals for your dates.

And that’s before factoring in the faff.

For long-haul, packages often win because tour operators bulk-buy flights and rooms. You’re not just paying for convenience — you’re sometimes getting a genuinely better price.

That doesn’t mean DIY never works. It just means long-haul is where all-inclusive usually earns its stripes.

All-Inclusive Is Perfect for Families… and Knackered Adults

All-inclusive holidays are built for ease.

For families, it’s obvious why they work.

Food’s sorted.
Drinks are sorted.
Entertainment’s sorted.
Kids’ clubs, pool games, tournaments, waterslides — the lot.

No constant “Can I have €5?” every five minutes.

And when the kids are old enough to disappear into a kids’ club or make holiday mates? Even better.

Our parents loved that stage. Tough jobs, busy lives — and suddenly, they could actually relax for once.

That’s the family win.

But here’s the other side…

All-inclusive is also perfect when you’re just absolutely done.

No planning restaurants.
No budgeting every cocktail.
No arguing about where to eat.

You wake up, grab breakfast, hit the pool, maybe book a spa day, maybe do nothing at all.

For couples — especially adults-only resorts — it’s calm, easy, and genuinely stress-free.

Different audiences. Same outcome.

Less faff. More holiday.

Apart From Less Stress… Is It Actually Good Value?

This bit depends entirely on you.

If you barely drink, never eat at the hotel, and plan to be out exploring 14 hours a day… you probably won’t see huge value.

But if you’re actually going to use what’s included?

It stacks up fast.

For us, value looks like this:

  • 24/7 room service (dangerous but elite)
  • Proper cocktails, not just watery rum and coke
  • Unlimited à la carte restaurants
  • Poolside snacks appearing like magic
  • A minibar that gets restocked without you begging
  • Entertainment when you can’t be bothered to leave the resort
  • Random pop-up food stalls by the pool
  • Activities you’d normally pay extra for

Individually, none of that feels massive.

Together? It turns into a holiday where you stop thinking about money.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, late-night room service… it’s all covered.

And that’s the real value.

Not having to mentally calculate every cocktail.

Not scanning menus for prices.

Not doing “let’s just skip dessert to save a bit.”

If you’re sun-starved and knackered, that freedom is worth a lot.

Perks, Perks, Perks!

Yes, You Can Leave The Resort!

One of the biggest myths about all-inclusive?

That you’re somehow locked inside like it’s a sun-soaked prison.

You’re not.

That’s unless you’re that tight and extracting every penny possible.

You can leave whenever you want. Go explore. Book excursions. Eat out locally. Wander into town. Do something daft like zipline 150ft above the jungle.

All-inclusive doesn’t cancel curiosity.

It just gives you a solid base.

And here’s the thing — even if you miss a few lunches or dinners because you’re out exploring, you’ll still likely get value overall.

We’ve even found little perks that help when you’re out and about:

  • Resorts that offer takeaway snacks
  • Soft cool boxes you can fill with drinks
  • Room service you can schedule before an early excursion

That means you’re not constantly dipping into your wallet just because you left the gate.

For us, the sweet spot is simple:

Relax properly.
Explore a bit.
Come back to cocktails and zero stress.

Best of both worlds.

Final Thoughts

So… are all-inclusive resorts worth it?

If you’re going long-haul, want minimal faff, and like the idea of knowing your spending upfront — chances are, yes.

If you’re flying short-haul somewhere walkable with great food and cheap drinks, DIY might win.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

But there is a right answer for the kind of holiday you want.

For us?

When we’re knackered, sun-starved and craving beach, food and zero decisions — all-inclusive wins every time.

No stress. No mental maths. No “shall we just split a starter?”

Just cocktails, decent food, and actually switching off.

That’s worth a lot.
