There are two types of people when it comes to early flights.

The ones dragging themselves out of bed at 3am, half asleep, hoping nothing goes wrong on the way to the airport…

And the ones already at the airport the night before, pint in hand, wondering why they ever did it any other way.

We’ve always leaned towards the second.

Not because it’s fancy — but because it just makes life easier and stops a lot of anxiety.

Because starting a holiday stressed and clock-watching?

Not for us.

Sometimes they’re a no-brainer. Other times, it’s money down the drain.

So here’s when to book one… and when to skip it..

Why We Swear By Airport Hotels Now

I think my love for airport hotels actually comes from growing up.

My dad treated it like part of the holiday — non-negotiable.

His packing skills? Questionable at best.
His sandal choice? Horrific.
But his logistical planning? Spot on.

Directions printed out. Timings locked in. Somehow always finding the best room in the place — all before the internet made it easy.

That stuck with me.

Then came the phase where we thought… we’ll just wing it.

You know the one.

Up at stupid o’clock. Half asleep. Throwing bags in the car and hoping everything goes to plan.

And to be fair… it usually does.

Until it doesn’t...

More Holiday. Less Faff.

All it takes is one bit of traffic, a breakdown, train delays — or that creeping feeling you’ve forgotten something like your passport — and suddenly your “exciting holiday start” feels more like a mild panic attack.

Or in my case…

A truck ploughing through the central reservation.

Six hours late getting to the airport — luckilly it was just for a trip to Spain.

If that had been Mexico or something long-haul… I’d have been absolutely devo’d.

That was the moment it clicked.

There’s a better way to start a trip than hoping nothing goes wrong.

That’s when we started properly booking airport hotels.

And honestly?

Once you’ve done it… you get it.

The Real Benefits (Why It’s Actually Worth It)

😌 A Stress-Free Start

This is the big one.

No early morning chaos. No watching the clock. No “we need to leave NOW” panic.

You’re already there.

Worst case? You wake up, roll over, and you’re still closer to your gate than you would’ve been at home.

😴 More Sleep (And Better Sleep)

The night before a flight is never great anyway.

You’re checking passports, double-checking bags, setting alarms you don’t trust…

But at least this way, you’re not dragging yourself out of bed at 3am and jumping straight into travel mode.

Even an extra hour (and a slower start) makes a massive difference.

And if your airline offers twilight check-in, it gets even better.

You can check in and drop your bags the night before — meaning all you’ve got to do in the morning is wake up and roll straight through to security.

🍻 The Holiday Starts the Night Before

This is the underrated one.

Instead of rushing around like a headless chicken… you’re having dinner, maybe a drink, and easing into the trip properly.

It flips the whole vibe.

You’re not “getting through the airport” — you’re already in holiday mode posting airport pint pics in Whatsapp groups.

🚶‍♂️ You’re Already There

No taxis or dodgy cars stressing you out. No wondering if the train’s going to be delayed. No last-minute drama.

You wake up… and you’re basically at the airport.

Some hotels are literally a short walk to the terminal. Or connected.

Those are the airport hotels we book.

It sounds simple, but it changes everything.

When It’s Worth It… And When It’s Not

When It’s 100% Worth It

Early flights (anything before 10am)
This is the big one. If you’re setting alarms at stupid o’clock, just stay over. It’s not worth the stress.

Long-haul trips
If you’re heading somewhere like Mexico, the last thing you want is travel chaos before you’ve even left the country.

Long journey to the airport
If it’s more than an hour or so, it starts to make a lot more sense.

Big trips or special occasions
Birthdays, big holidays, something you’ve been looking forward to for ages — start it properly.

❌ When It’s Probably Not Worth It

Midday or evening flights
Plenty of time to get there without the stress.

You live close to the airport
If it’s a 20-minute drive, save your money.

You’re on a tight budget
Let’s be honest — it can add £80–£200 to the trip. Sometimes that’s better spent at the bar when you land.

⚖️ The Reality: Weighing It Up

For us, it’s not something we do every single time.

But for a long-haul trip you’ve been waiting ages for… it’s a no-brainer.

Miss a flight to somewhere like Amsterdam? Annoying, yeah — but there’s another one round the corner.

Miss your flight to Mexico? You’re losing at least a day of your holiday… if not more.

And that’s not a risk we’re willing to take.

But when it makes sense… it really makes sense.

It’s one of those things where once you’ve had a smooth, stress-free start to a trip, going back to the 3am scramble just feels a bit grim.

If you’re heading somewhere like Cancun, a stressful start is one of those avoidable mistakes that can knock the whole vibe off before you’ve even arrived.

Airport Hotels + Getting There: Our Recommendation

We’ll be honest — we don’t even drive to the airport.

We always get the train.

Less hassle, no parking, no worrying about the car… job done.

Now, we get it — the train or coach isn’t for everyone.
Depending on where you live, it can be a bit of a pain in the arse.

But here’s the way we look at it…

Instead of dropping a chunk of money on airport parking, that same money can go towards:

👉 Your train tickets
👉 And an airport hotel the night before

We’ve done exactly that with places like the Sofitel at Gatwick — it’s literally connected to the terminal, so those early starts become a lot less painful.

👉 We’ve reviewed that stay here if you want a closer look

Suddenly, you’ve turned a stressful early start into a much smoother one.

And honestly? The train isn’t that bad — especially on airport routes.

No driving. No traffic. No stress.

You just turn up, sit down, and let someone else deal with it.

It’s not about spending more — it’s about spending it better.

Grab a few beers for the train, and you’ll be laughing.

Final Verdict: Are Airport Hotels Worth It?

If you’ve got an early flight, a long journey to the airport, or a big trip you’ve been looking forward to…

Yeah — they’re absolutely worth it.

It’s not about luxury.

It’s about starting your holiday without the stress, the rushing, and that “this could all go wrong” feeling before you’ve even left the country.

If your flight’s later in the day or you live close to the airport?

Save your money. Grab a pint in departures and crack on.

But for those early starts and long-haul trips…

We’ll take a chilled evening, a proper night’s sleep, and a stress-free walk to the terminal every time.
