Arrival at Cancun Airport Mexico
That moment…

Ever heard of a “Mexican minute”?

It basically means things take as long as they take. Could be quick… could be a while.

And that’s pretty much the perfect way to describe arriving at Cancún Airport.

One of the questions we see constantly is:

“How long does it take to get through immigration, baggage reclaim, and customs at Cancun airport?”

The only answer…

How long is a piece of string?

There are a few variables that affect it — how many flights land at the same time, what terminal you arrive at, and whether your bags decide to take their sweet time.

But don’t worry.

This quick guide will walk you through what happens when you land in Cancún, roughly how long each stage takes, and where you’ll find your transfer once you’re through customs.

Quick Answer:

On average, it takes around 45–90 minutes to get through Cancun Airport Terminal 2, including immigration, baggage reclaim and customs.

On a quiet day, you could be through in 30–40 minutes, but baggage delays can easily push this closer to two hours.

Step 1: Immigration (Passport Control)

First up — immigration.

Once you step off the plane, you’ll follow the crowd through the airport corridors until you reach the immigration hall. There are usually plenty of desks open, but if several long-haul flights land at the same time, queues can build quickly.

If you’re flying from the UK, chances are you’ll land in Terminal 2. We’ve never really had a problem at this stage though — it’s always been a breeze for us. In 2025, we were through immigration and into baggage reclaim within five minutes.

So despite what people panic about, this usually isn’t the bit that does the damage.

On a good day, you could be through in 5–10 minutes. If a load of flights land at once, it could still take longer, but in our experience, immigration at Cancún has been one of the easiest parts.

When you reach the desk, the officer will give your passport and face a quick once-over, stamp you in, and off you go.

From there, you’ll head straight to baggage reclaim — and this is where things can start dragging a bit.

Step 2: Baggage Reclaim (The Waiting Game)

This is where your Mexican minute really starts to make sense.

After immigration, you’ll head straight down to baggage reclaim.

Sometimes your bags are already circling by the time you arrive. Other times… you’ll be standing there staring at an empty conveyor belt wondering if your suitcase decided to stay in Gatwick.

On our last trip, immigration took about five minutes, but we then waited nearly two hours for the bags to appear. The time before that? Around 20 minutes.

So yeah… it varies.

One thing we’ve noticed is that if domestic Mexican flights arrive around the same time as you or it’s lunchtime, they often seem to get priority.

When we rolled into baggage reclaim, the area was almost empty. Then slowly people started piling in and piling out whilst we’ree waiting like lemons — pacing, sweating, getting a bit frustrated.

Eventually, the carousel kicks into life, and the bags start flowing.

Once yours shows up, grab it and head towards customs.

You’re on the home stretch now.

And don’t worry — this next bit sounds more dramatic than it actually is.

Step 3: Customs (Quick and Painless)

Once you’ve got your bags, you’ll head towards customs.

This part is usually very straightforward.

You’ll almost certainly be asked if you have any cigarettes on you. Just say no and keep moving. Don’t dither or panic, or you’ll end up getting your suitcase rummaged through.

I usually have a single pack on me from the UK, but I still say no and walk on. Russ once hesitated, got pulled aside for a quick suitcase check, and then was sent on his way.

What they’re really asking and looking for is people carrying loads of cartons or more than the allowance.

If you’re travelling from the UK, it would be madness to bring any in anyway — cigarettes are cheap as chips in Mexico.

You’ll then walk through a lane where your bags may go through an X-ray scanner, and sometimes there’s a traffic light system.

The traffic light is completely random. It doesn’t pick people because they look dodgy — it’s just luck. If it flashes red, you’ll get a quick suitcase search and be on your way.

Compared to the baggage wait, this part usually takes a couple of minutes at most.

And once you’re through…

You’ll walk through a set of doors and officially be landside at Cancun Airport.

But before you start celebrating, there’s one final stage waiting for you.

And if it’s your first time in Cancún, it can catch people completely off guard.

Step 4: The Cancun Airport “Shark Tank”

Once you walk through those doors, you’ll enter what many travellers jokingly call the Cancun Airport shark tank.

Don’t panic — no actual sharks.

Just a room full of very enthusiastic people trying to sell you tours, taxis, transfers, and timeshares.

They’ll smile, ask how your flight was, and sometimes try to make it sound like they’re helping you find your transfer.

They’re not.

They’ll ask things like: Who are you travelling with, TUI?” Sometimes they might approach you knowing your name, because they saw it on your case, “Are you, Mr Smith? I am your transfer”

It can sound official, but it isn’t. They’re just trying to get you to stop and talk.

The trick is simple: keep walking.

Shades on, resting-bitch face activated.

Don’t stop, don’t engage, and don’t feel rude. Just say “No thanks” and head straight through.

Within about 30 seconds, you’ll reach the exit doors where your actual transfer companies and taxis are waiting outside.

Once you’re out there, the chaos disappears, and it’s easy to find your driver.

Where Do You Find TUI Transfers and Private Transfers?

Once you’ve escaped the shark tank and stepped outside, things get a lot calmer.

This is where you’ll find the actual transfer companies waiting.

If you’re travelling with TUI or another package holiday provider, you’ll usually see their reps standing outside with branded shirts or signs. They’ll direct you towards the correct coach or minibus for your hotel.

You’ll most likely spot the coaches as soon as you walk outside the terminal and into the furnace. Fortunately, it’s not a huge area to manage.

For private transfers, the driver will normally be waiting just outside the exit holding a clipboard or sign with your name on it.

If you can’t see them straight away, don’t panic. The area can look a bit chaotic at first, but drivers tend to group together and it’s usually just a case of walking a few metres and spotting your name.

Most people will be heading to one of the following:

  • TUI coach transfer
  • Shared shuttle
  • Private transfer
  • Taxi

Once you’ve found your driver or rep, that’s it — you’re officially on your way to the Riviera Maya or Cancún hotel zone.

And after the airport experience, that first cold drink at the resort tastes even better.

Why We Use A Private Transfer

If you’re wondering why we use a private transfer instead of the free coach, we covered it properly in this guide, including who we use.

The short version?

We can’t be bothered waiting around for everyone else.

There’s always someone who’s decided to buy duty-free, have ten cigarettes, or sort out their vape before even thinking about getting on the coach.

Then comes hotel roulette.

Will your hotel be first… or the last stop three resorts later?

With a private transfer, we’re often at the hotel two hours earlier than the coach. You can also order some cold beers or drinks, which will be in an ice box waiting for you.

One quick tip though — if you decide to switch to a private transfer after booking a package holiday, let the coach rep know. Otherwise they’ll be standing there waiting for you, which isn’t really fair.

The coaches and private transfer drivers are usually right near each other, so there’s really no excuse not to mention it.

Your private transfer will also monitor your flights for any delays or early arrivals.

Welcome to Cancun. You Made It!

Once you’re outside the airport and in your transfer, the hard part is done.

After that it’s just a short drive to your hotel, a cold drink in hand, and the start of your holiday.

Quick recap of what to expect:

  • Fast arrival: 30–45 minutes
  • Typical arrival: 60–90 minutes
  • Bad baggage day: 2+ hours
