If you’re looking for a hotel in Amsterdam city centre, location is everything.
You want somewhere close enough to stumble back to after a few drinks… but also close enough to the good stuff during the day.
The Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam absolutely nails that.
It’s just a few minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, which makes arriving ridiculously easy, and it comes with a few nice perks too — like free wine at happy hour, complimentary bike hire, and decent takeaway coffee for those mornings when you’re running on about four hours sleep.

Every day from 4–5pm, guests can grab complimentary wine in Cafe Celia. The place gets lively pretty quickly.

You’re in Amsterdam… you might as well do it properly. The hotel offers complimentary bikes with locks.

We made a slightly odd request late at night (more on that later). They sorted it without any fuss.

Sounds simple, but after miles of walking around Amsterdam, this hits the spot.
Where Is Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam Located?
Location-wise, this hotel is about as good as it gets.
The Kimpton De Witt sits roughly 400 metres from Amsterdam Centraal Station, which is basically where most people arrive in the city.
So instead of messing around with taxis or dragging your suitcase halfway across Amsterdam, you can be checked in and dropping your bags within minutes.
And let’s be honest…
Every euro you save on taxis is another euro for FEBO.
Speaking of temptation — directly opposite the hotel you’ll find a FEBO and a coffeeshop, both open late.
You’ll probably tell yourself you won’t go.
You will.
For the novelty, obviously.
The hotel is also surrounded by tram stops and bus routes, making it ridiculously easy to get around the city.
Or if you want to do Amsterdam properly, the hotel offers free bike hire with locks, which is easily one of the best ways to explore.
And yes… the bikes are actually pretty decent.
Amsterdam Tip
Before you arrive, download Google Maps offline.
Amsterdam looks simple on a map… until you actually start walking around it.
Then you realise it’s basically a maze of canals, bridges, and tiny streets that all look suspiciously similar.
I’ve been a few times now and still have moments where I think:
“Where the hell am I?”
If you prefer something old-school, you can also grab a free paper map from the I Amsterdam store at Centraal Station.
Sometimes it’s just easier to unfold a big map and pretend you know what you’re doing.
Nearby Attractions
One of the best things about staying here is that most of Amsterdam’s main attractions are within walking distance.
Some of the closest spots include:
- Royal Palace / Dam Square – 700m
- Oude Kerk – 700m
- Red Light District – 750m
- De 9 Straatjes – 1.2km
- Anne Frank House – 1.2km
Basically, you’re close enough to everything that you can wander around all day and still be back at the hotel in minutes when your legs start complaining.
First Impressions & Check-In
“Russ… look at those incense sticks.”
That was the first thing I noticed walking into the Kimpton De Witt lobby.
We were already slightly delirious after sitting on the runway at Gatwick for six hours, so everything felt a bit surreal at that point.
As we walked up to reception, the receptionist greeted us with a huge smile.
“Welcome back, gentlemen! How can I help?”
“Um… can we check in, please?”
She glanced at the clock.
“It’s 21:20! Where have you been? Well… you’re here now. Welcome to Amsterdam!”
That energy instantly lifted the mood.
One thing you’ll quickly learn — and something I love about the Dutch — is their directness and brutal honesty. It cuts out confusion, and you always know exactly where you stand.
Within a few minutes we had our keys and were heading upstairs.
“Right,” I said to Russ.
“Bags down, quick shower… then let’s hit the town. I need a drink. Or five.”
Even if I was still wearing my sweaty travel trousers.
Room Review
The rooms at Kimpton De Witt strike a nice balance between stylish and comfortable.
You can tell straight away that this isn’t just another standard hotel room. Small details are everywhere — like the unique door knockers on each room and the vintage telephones mounted along the hallway walls.
It gives the place a bit of character without feeling over the top.
The overall design is modern, slightly quirky, and very much in line with Amsterdam’s creative vibe.
The Bed Test (Important Research)
First things first — the bed test.
Naturally.
After travelling all day, there’s only one thing to do when you walk into a hotel room:
Jump on the bed and see if it passes inspection.
Safe to say… this one passed with flying colours.
The mattress was deep, the pillows were ridiculously comfortable, and after a full day walking around Amsterdam, it felt borderline heavenly.
Exactly what you want from a city break hotel.
TV & Random Discoveries
The TV channel selection was a bit limited, but we somehow ended up discovering a channel called Pet Funnies, which quickly became our go-to background TV.
We actually first discovered it while sitting in a coffeeshop earlier in the trip.
Which feels oddly appropriate.
For reference, this was the standard room, not one of the upgraded suites.
Bathroom
Who doesn’t appreciate a well-organised bathroom where everything is exactly where you expect it to be?
Plenty of towels, clean layout, and a shower that easily fits two people.
You know… for water conservation purposes.

The Important Stuff: Coffee
This bit genuinely surprised us.
Real china mugs.
Holy smokes.
The coffee machine leans slightly toward the old-school side, but it actually makes a really good cup of coffee.
The only slightly confusing part?
The coffee pods come in different colours but don’t really explain what they are — so every morning becomes a bit of a gamble.
Please… not decaf.

Happy Hour & Free Wine
This is the bit a lot of people get excited about.
Every day from 4pm to 5pm, the hotel hosts a complimentary wine happy hour at Cafe Celia.
Yes.
Free wine.
The place was buzzing when we walked past — guests chatting away, glasses clinking, everyone getting nicely merry before heading out into the city.
We actually skipped it.
Wine absolutely ruins us the next day, and we had far too much Amsterdam to explore.
But judging by the atmosphere, it’s clearly a very popular perk.
Plant A Tree
If you’re the type of traveller who doesn’t need their room cleaned every single day, the Kimpton has a nice little sustainability idea.
Instead of housekeeping, you can hang the “Plant a Tree” sign on your door.
In return, the hotel plants a tree on your behalf.
Simple idea, but a pretty cool way to do something positive while travelling.
And let’s be honest… sometimes you’re out exploring all day anyway, so the room doesn’t exactly need cleaning.
Everything Else
A few other things worth mentioning during our stay:
WiFi
The WiFi worked perfectly the whole time we were there.
No complicated “premium plans” or weird login systems — just connect and get on with it.
Which is exactly how hotel WiFi should be.
Safe
The room included a digital safe, large enough to fit a 14″ laptop, passports and the usual travel bits.
Noise Levels
Surprisingly quiet. We didn’t hear a thing — not even the famous Amsterdam tram bells, which are normally impossible to miss.
Considering how central the hotel is, that was pretty impressive.
The Odd Request
It’s not often you wander down to reception close to midnight and ask:
“Do you happen to have any nail clippers?”
But after a quick rummage behind the desk, the guy came back with a brand new pair.
Problem solved.
My annoyingly chipped toenail could finally be dealt with.
A small moment… but one that sums up how helpful the staff were.
Work Spaces
If you need to get a bit of work done, the hotel has plenty of open spaces and cosy corners where you can sit with a laptop.
Perfect if you’re mixing a city break with a bit of remote work.
Who This Hotel Is Best For
- Couples visiting Amsterdam
- First-time visitors to the city
- People who want to stay near Centraal Station
- Travellers who like boutique hotels with a bit of character
Looking for Something More Budget-Friendly?
If you want something cheaper but still right in the centre, we’ve also stayed at the Ibis Amsterdam Centraal Station.
It’s definitely more of a no-frills hotel, but the location is brilliant — literally next to Centraal Station.
Rooms are simple, clean, and perfect if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the city anyway.
We stayed in Room 503, which had a great view across the city at night.
Nothing fancy, but honestly? A solid base for an Amsterdam trip and a decent bar to boot.
Final Thoughts
Russ picked this hotel.
And to be fair… he absolutely nailed it.
The location makes exploring Amsterdam ridiculously easy, and the little extras — like free bikes, happy hour wine, and takeaway coffee — make the stay feel a bit more special than your typical city hotel.
Yes, it’s slightly on the pricier side, but Amsterdam isn’t exactly a cheap city anyway.
When you factor in the location and perks, it actually balances out pretty well.
