Heading to the O2 Academy in Bournemouth for a gig?
From being the designated responsible adult (Akela) in charge of parking, to pre-gig drinks, decent food, the essential post-gig kebab, and the best seats in the house… we’ve got you covered.
Whether you’re local or making a night of it with a hotel stay, here’s everything you need to know before heading to the O2 Academy Bournemouth.
Where to Grab a Pint Before the Gig
Let’s get straight to what really matters — pre-gig drinks.
Chaplin’s is the go-to. A live music bar just a few minutes’ walk from the O2, it’s a local favourite with interesting food options, multiple menus, and a cracking outdoor garden.
Beef dripping hash browns?
Sold.
If your gig’s on a weekend, Chaplin’s can get rammed, and backup options nearby are a bit tragic. You could try Street Corner Bar, or if you fancy stretching the legs, Urban Reef on the seafront.
If you’re arriving early doors — or Pokesdown train station is your first stop — it’s worth checking out The Brewhouse in Southbourne. They’ve got a great range of beers and ales, many brewed onsite.
Buses run regularly along the main routes, so check the app quickly or head back to Pokesdown and catch a bus from there for the quickest option.
Jerk Chicken & Kebabs
What’s your gig-night craving?
Boscombe won’t win any beauty contests, but when it comes to food near O2 Academy Bournemouth, you won’t have to go far.
Jerk chicken and Caribbean flavours? Right opposite the O2.
Best kebab in the area? Just a few steps across the road.
Wagyu burger with your pint? Chaplin’s has you covered.
And if that’s not your thing, there’s Korean, Portuguese, Thai, Latin American, Indian, and Italian all within easy reach.
McDonald’s is practically next door for post-gig munchies, but your winning run is Efes Kebab or Golden Grill House.
Efes is the locals’ go-to and perfect for soaking up all that beer you promised not to drink because it’s a “school night.”
It’s only later you regret saying yes to chilli sauce because you got called boss.
We haven’t tried Golden Grill House yet, but the reviews are solid. Walking past, the smell of grilled meat nearly had us ordering on the spot.
If you’re rubbish at making food decisions like us, just let your nose decide.
Arrive Early & Hope ‘The Gods’ Are Open
If you’re short (like Russell) or your knees can’t handle two hours of shindigs anymore (like me), you’ll want to head straight to The Gods for the best view in the venue.
The catch?
They’re not open for every event, so it’s pure potluck. I’m guessing it’s tiered — if the floor and balcony sell out, they release more tickets for the upper balcony depending on demand.
Seats are limited and first-come, first served. Once you’re in, you’ll get a wristband so you can come and go as you please.
There’s a bar downstairs on the 2nd floor, too.
We’ve seen tons of live acts at this venue, and this is hands down the best spot. You can put your beer down without turning it into soup, have a dance, and sit down when your legs need a breather.
Plus, the tiered setup means you’ll still get a clear view even if people are standing in front of you.
By the way… you’ll need a remortgage for the two-pint cups.
Don’t Forget Your O2 Priority
Queue lengths vary depending on the act.
For The Reytons, the line was snaking way down the road, and it was absolutely freezing.
Yet the O2 Priority queue? Empty. Not a soul.
Surely someone in that massive crowd was on O2, right?
Do people even know this exists?
Thanks to O2 Priority, we waltzed straight in and bagged seats in The Gods. With a queue that long, I doubt there would have been any left by the time we finally got inside.
If you’re on O2, use it — it’s a serious game-changer.
Other perks include things like free bacon rolls and data roaming in Europe and many destinations worldwide.
Parking
The Sovereign Centre car park, which the O2 Academy recommends, officially says it closes at 8 pm on maps and their website.
From our experience, it stays open later on gig nights, but there’s no mention of this anywhere.
Bit of a gamble really… because who wants to spend the night locked in a car park?
That said, we’ve used it for gigs before and never had an issue.
If you want a guaranteed option, Hawkwood Road Car Park is open 24 hours.
I wouldn’t recommend parking in the side streets unless you know the area well.
Hotels Near O2 Academy Bournemouth
We’re not exactly experts on accommodation… mainly because, well, we live here.
But if you need a place to stay, there are plenty of hotels nearby, mostly heading towards the seaside. Many are smaller hotels, so prices can jump a bit on gig nights.
If you’re heading towards Bournemouth town centre, Premier Inn and Travelodge are solid budget options, which are about a 10-minute walk from the O2.
No frills, but at least you know what you’re getting. And that lifesaving breakfast in the morning without having to overthink it with a foggy head.
Transport-wise, buses run until around midnight, or you can grab a United Taxis cab and check the fare before booking online — no nasty surprises.
If you’re up for it, the walk to Bournemouth takes about 20 minutes.
Final Thoughts
I bloody love this venue. A Victorian opera house with serious character, and I’ve been stumbling through those doors since the under-18s nightclub days.
Back when we thought we were the cool kids necking a bottle of MD 20/20 beforehand.
I just wish the drink prices were a little kinder and The Gods opened up more often. Even if it meant paying an extra fiver tops, Russ and I would be at way more gigs.
I said a fiver tops, O2.
Give them an inch, and they’ll take a yard.
We’re not exactly spring chickens anymore, and Russ has the height issue.
When you work full-time, weekends are for recovery. And when you go to a gig on a school night (because it seemed like a good idea at the time), you need the whole week to recover.
You want that balance — the experience, the good vibes, and not feeling completely knackered the next day.
Oh, by the way… Pepsi is not ‘okay’.
