Southern Spain in February: What’s the Weather Really Like?

With temperatures reaching a glorious 21–22°C for us in Alicante and Málaga over the past two years, it’s the perfect time to ditch the gloom for sunshine, exploration, and plenty of tapas.

Average Temperatures In Spain February
Southern Spain and the Canary Islands are your go-to spots if you’re craving warmer climes. They’re also much cheaper than your Barcelonas and Madrids.
Sunshine is almost guaranteed, Alicante boasts an impressive 300 days of sunshine a year, while Málaga tops even that with 320 days. Over the past two Februarys, we’ve enjoyed glorious weather in these regions, with temperatures peaking at 21–22°C.
One of the perks of choosing a city with a beach in winter is having a backup plan. Sure, sunshine is likely, but the weather can be unpredictable anywhere in the world. If the skies don’t play ball, you’ve got museums, amazing food, shopping, and plenty of other things to do to fall back on.
I had the pleasure of rain in Ibiza once. Non-stop. It was boring as heck!
There’s something like a revival about a few days of sunshine in the middle of winter.
It’s like a natural energy boost. Suddenly, you’re walking with a spring in your step, ready to battle the last leg and final boss of the dreary UK winter.
Remember lockdown? Glorious sunshine for three months straight. Typical!

Why Málaga Should Be Your Next Easy Getaway
Málaga isn’t just about the glorious weather and 320 days of sunshine a year. This awesome city offers a perfect mix of culture, beaches, and delicious food, making it an ideal winter escape.
There’s also an excellent street art scene!
For a really easy stress-free city break from the UK, you can’t go wrong.
Here’s why…
The Brucey bonus is that Málaga is incredibly easy to get to and get around. It’s a walkable city, there are bikes and e-scooters everywhere as well as plenty of buses zooming about the city.
With plenty of cheap flights from UK airports and a super-convenient airport-to-city connection, you can soak up the atmosphere of the excellent food and sites in no time. The subway from the airport costs just a couple of euros and gets you to the city centre in around ten minutes.
Coffee in hand within twenty minutes of leaving the terminal? Perfect!
And if you’re visiting between 22nd February and 2nd March (2025 dates) you’re in for a treat. Málaga Carnival. lights up the city with colourful parades, music, and celebrations you won’t want to miss.
Prices on accommodations and flights will probably bump up around those dates, so it’s best to book early or keep an eye on the situation.
Alicante in February
Alicante feels like a second home to me. My mother has lived here for over 20 years, giving us the perfect excuse for regular visits (and free digs!).
Like Málaga, Alicante delivers on all fronts: incredible food, beautiful beaches, and plenty of things to do. One of my favourite spots is the Santa Bárbara Castle, perched high above the city with spectacular views. It’s the perfect place to soak up some winter sun and snap a photo or two and a few videos.
Gotta take those memories, guys!
Getting to Alicante is fairly easy, with plenty of cheap flights from the UK. The city centre is just 20 minutes by bus from the airport, so you’ll be exploring in no time.
That said, unlike Málaga, Alicante doesn’t have a train station at the airport, which can make public transport a little less convenient. The bus or taxi will have to do for this trip.
Tips
- You’ll need a cardigan/coat or hoody. You’ll feel the chill in the evenings.
- Bring sunglasses! The low sun is bright as heck and blinding at times.

- Use Google Flights to browse cheap flights and set up alerts
It Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive
I’ve been lucky enough to escape the winter blues by staying at my mum’s place in Alicante. But understandably, not everyone has that option.
If I’m being honest, we much prefer Málaga anyway. It’s more our vibe, there’s lots going on.
Your Spanish getaway doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Return flights can be snapped up for under £50 (we haven’t paid more than £100 for the two of us yet).
Plus, you can find budget-friendly accommodation, like easyHotels, just a two-minute walk from Málaga’s train station for around €30 a night. It’s basic, but for a private room at that price, it’s a steal!
A walk into Centro Málaga is only ten minutes as well.
Final Thoughts
Whether it’s escaping the dreary UK weather, soaking up some much-needed sunshine, or just enjoying a change of scenery, Spain in February offers all the right vibes!
Sure, it might not be scorching hot, but those mild, sunny days feel like a gift when you’ve not seen the sun for three months. Plus, with fewer tourists around, you get to experience Spain at a slower, more relaxed pace.
Pack your bags, and leave the winter behind. Your vitamin D levels will thank you!
