Gay Amsterdam: Bars, Saunas & What It’s Really Like 👀

They say Amsterdam is the city of freedom.
A place that just feels different the second you land.
After spending a few days here, we get it.
There’s a proper sense of openness about the place — people doing their thing, no questions asked, no weird looks.
We ended up diving into some of the gay scene out of curiosity more than anything… and yeah, Amsterdam doesn’t exactly do things by halves.
It’s bold, it’s open, and there’s something going on for pretty much everyone — whether you’re after a chilled bar, something a bit more lively, or… something a bit more eye-opening 👀
So… here’s what we got up to.
First Impressions
Our first thoughts on Amsterdam?
It’s the people.
The styles, the confidence, the way everyone just gets on with their own thing.
You notice it straight away — the mix of cultures, the openness, the lack of judgement. No one’s staring, no one cares.
And yeah, that’s before you even get into the Red Light District or the smell of weed on every corner…
That’s just standard Amsterdam.
But the LGBTQ+ side of things? It takes that same energy and turns it up a notch.
If you’re curious — or just want to see something a bit different — you can really go as far as you want here.
From chilled drinks and people-watching… to full-on themed nights and everything in between.
No pressure, no expectations — just options.
Pink Point Amsterdam: LGBTQ+ Info Hub

It’s a good shout if you want to plan things a bit… rather than stumbling into it all blind like we did.
Reguliersdwarsstraat: Amsterdam’s LGBTQ+ Hub
If you’re not quite ready to dive headfirst into the deep end… this is where you start.
Reguliersdwarsstraat is Amsterdam’s main LGBTQ+ street — a short stretch packed with bars, food spots, and a proper buzzing atmosphere most nights.
It’s lively without being overwhelming, and a lot more “grab a drink and see what happens” than anything too full-on.
We ended up here just from following the flow… and it’s probably the most accessible part of the scene if you just want a good night out without overthinking it.

PRIK: A Solid Stop
If you’re looking for an easy way into the LGBTQ+ scene in Amsterdam, PRIK is a great place to start.
It’s fun, relaxed, and doesn’t feel intimidating — which is ideal if you’re just easing yourself into it.
The vibe is more on the younger side (students, mixed crowd), and there’s a decent outdoor area, but it’s generally packed in the warmer months.
Drinks are fairly priced too — which, in Amsterdam, is always a win.
And the menu… yeah, it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Fancy a “Dirty Asshole” or a “Dutch Daddy”? You’re covered.
There are also lockers, so you can relax, have a few drinks, and not worry about your stuff while you’re up dancing or chatting.

The Web: Lively, Dark, and Straight to the Point
The Web is a proper old-school feeling bar.
We stopped in for a few drinks, and the guy behind the bar (possibly the owner) set the tone straight away — chatty, lively, and welcoming.
Which, honestly, makes a big difference in places like this. If the vibe’s off, you feel it straight away.
Upstairs is where things get a bit more… interesting.
Dark rooms, slings, glory holes — the full works.
We went midweek, so it wasn’t exactly packed, but you could tell it’d be a different story on a weekend.
Crowd-wise, it leaned more 40+ while we were there, so it depends on what you’re into.
Still worth popping in for a drink either way.

Dirty Dicks: Around the Corner and a Bit More Lively
Just around the corner is Dirty Dicks.
We ended up here after chatting to someone at another bar who was heading over — always a good enough reason to follow and see what’s going on.
It felt a bit more lively than The Web, even midweek.
Worth noting as well — after midnight, prices drop in a few places around here, which is always a bonus.
We had a quick look around, a couple of drinks… then moved on to the sauna.

NZ Sauna: Our First Experience
NZ is the only gay sauna in Amsterdam and is run by the same people behind Club Church.
It’s just a few minutes from Central Station, so easy enough to find.
Inside, it’s actually cleaner than you might expect, with a mix of ages and people throughout the day.
From what we’d seen and read, the afternoon tends to attract more of the older “daddy” crowd — if that’s your thing.
We went after midnight, when entry drops to around €10, which felt like a no-brainer.
This was my first time in a place like this, whereas Russ had been before…
Cough… sl*t.
We had a look around, took it all in, and yeah…
Safe to say it was an experience.

Final Thoughts
So… what did we make of it?
Gay Amsterdam is exactly what you’d expect — and then some.
It’s open, it’s bold, and you can pretty much make the experience whatever you want it to be.
You can keep it chilled with a few drinks and a wander…
Or lean into it properly and see what the city really has to offer.
That’s the beauty of it — there’s no pressure either way.
One thing we would say?
If you’re even slightly curious, don’t leave it too late.
Check out somewhere like Pink Point early on, or grab that map from the sauna, and get a feel for what’s going on while you’re there.
Events change, nights vary, and it’s easy to miss out if you’re just winging it.
(Which… we kind of did.)
Also worth knowing — boundaries are respected.
“No” means “no”, and you’re never expected to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
You can dip in, have a look, and leave whenever you want.
No pressure. No awkwardness.
