Christchurch is a Strange Place…

If you’ve come from Christchurch town centre, you can’t miss Christchurch Priory.

It dominates the skyline — watching over the town, the rivers, and pretty much everything around it.

Growing up in Burton, it was always there.
One of those things you don’t really notice… until you do.

Although, I’ll be honest — as a teenager, I had a bit of a grudge against it.

There’s only so much you can do in a small village in the 90s/early 2000s.
Scrumpy, White Lightning… and annoying farmers was about the peak of it.

And those bells at 9am?
Absolutely relentless.

So what’s this got to do with St Catherine’s Hill?

Well — the Priory wasn’t actually meant to be where it is now.

It was originally planned to be built on St Catherine’s Hill.

The locals weren’t too keen on that idea…
and decided to do something about it.

A Bit of Classic British Stubbornness

Legend has it that all the building materials were delivered to the hill, ready to start construction the next day.

Overnight?

They were moved.

Not once.
Not twice.
But multiple times.

Back to the original site.

Eventually, Ranulf Flambard gave up and took it as a sign.

Fair play, really.

It’s Only Ten Minutes From Central Christchurch

Ten minutes ago, you were surrounded by traffic, housing estates, and the usual chaos.

Now?

It feels like you’ve stepped into a completely different world.

Heathland. Trees. Proper peace and quiet.

Just the sound of birds and the crunch of gravel under your feet.

The best part?

You don’t need to be some seasoned hiker to enjoy it.

St Catherine’s Hill is only around 180ft high, so the climb is easy and actually pretty enjoyable.

No gasping for air. No regrets halfway up.

Just a steady stroll with some great views waiting at the top.

It’s the kind of place locals use all the time — whether it’s for a quick escape, a dog walk, or just to clear their head.

And once you’re up there?

Slow it down.

Take it in.

Because this is one of those spots that reminds you how much greenery we’ve actually got on our doorstep

Keep an eye out as well — you might spot the Silver-Studded Blue butterfly if you’re lucky.

Another great walk and escape near central Christchurch is Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve, which we covered in this guide – Stanpit Marsh Christchurch Guide: Walks, Nature, Pubs & Food

Hill Top Sights & Nature

Near the top on the right, you’ll find a viewpoint with a map showing nearby locations and distances.

It’s one of those where you go:

“Wait… the Needles are that close?”

Spoiler: they’re not that close.

Still wouldn’t fancy swimming it.

Once you start walking around the edge of the hill, the views just keep coming.

And this is where it really hits you —

Just how much countryside we’ve got around here.

Greenery for miles.

No crowds. No chaos. Just open space.

And it’s not just a pretty viewpoint either.

St Catherine’s Hill has a serious bit of history behind it.

We’re talking Bronze Age.

There are several tumuli (burial mounds) scattered around the hill, some of which were later used during both World Wars.

There was even a nuclear bunker up here during the Cold War.

Not bad for a casual walk, eh?

Wall Art St Catherine’s Hill

The last time I came up here — which, to be fair, was a while ago — the buildings looked pretty rough.

Grey. Worn. A bit depressing, if anything.

Kinda Soviet.

You’ve got things like water treatment and reservoir buildings up here… so yeah, not exactly winning any beauty contests.

Now though?

It’s a completely different story.

The place has been covered in wall art — and honestly, it’s a big upgrade.

Some people might call it a mess…
But most of it is actually pretty quality.

It gives the whole area a bit of character instead of that old “forgotten wartime bunker” vibe.
And you can tell the people doing it actually respect the place.

They’re not trashing it — they’re working with what’s already there.

Best message we saw?
“Take Your Rubbish Home.”

Simple. Fair. And somehow needed saying., the last time I ventured up here, which admittedly was a while ago, the buildings were grey, old and looking pretty sorry themselves.

Water treatment and reservoir chambers? Check

Now we’ve got some cool wall art up. Some say it’s a mess, but most of the work is incredibly awesome!

We think it looks better than the wartime vibe it had before!

Final Thoughts

As locals (for now), we’re pretty spoilt having places like this on our doorstep.

It’s easy. It’s peaceful. And it’s one of those spots you can come back to again and again without it getting old.

Even in winter, it’s worth the walk.

Yeah, it’s a bit colder…
but the clear views, crisp air, and those choppy white waves in the distance make it feel even better.

Whether you’re after a quick walk, a bit of headspace, or just somewhere different from the usual routine —

St Catherine’s Hill delivers.

And if nothing else. It’s proof you don’t need to travel far to feel like you’ve escaped for a bit.
