Best Pubs in Mudeford & Stanpit: Pints, Deals, Food & Darts

Looking for the best pubs in Mudeford and Stanpit?
You’re in the right place.
This little corner of Dorset has some cracking pubs within walking distance of each other — perfect if you’ve been wandering around Stanpit Marsh, down by Mudeford Quay, or Friars Cliff.
Expect proper local pubs, decent pints, good pub grub and a few stories thrown in for good measure — including one pub that was once linked to Christchurch’s smuggling days and a woman known locally as the “Protecting Angel of the Smugglers.”
So if you’re planning a wander around the area and fancy knowing where the best places are to stop for a pint (or three), here are the pubs worth checking out in Mudeford and Stanpit.

The Ship in Distress – Stanpit
“Come in as customers, leave as friends.”
That’s the slogan of The Ship in Distress, and to be fair… it sums the place up pretty well.
This is one of those proper local pubs where you instantly feel welcome. It’s friendly, cosy and easily my favourite pub in the area.
The Ship sits right next to Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve, which makes it the perfect spot for a pint after a walk around the marsh or along Christchurch Harbour.
Inside you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of decent lagers and local ales on tap. In winter it’s the kind of place you want to hide away in by the fire. In summer the beer garden is great for sitting outside with a pint after exploring the marsh.
There’s also plenty of parking and some excellent pub grub if you’re feeling hungry.
This is where you can have a pint and lunch for £9.99 Monday to Friday with a decent menu. The burger sauce is unreal.

Christchurch: A Town with a Notorious Smuggling History
Christchurch has a long history with smugglers, and the Ship in Distress was right in the middle of it.
A local woman named Hannah Sellers, better known as Mother Sellers, played a big part in the smuggling trade around Christchurch Harbour. She was so well known locally that a bridge in the marshland was eventually named after her.
Contraband was believed to have been stored in the Ship in Distress before being quietly transported up the River Avon and River Stour, sometimes travelling as far inland as Winchester.
The nearby Mother Sellers Bridge, which crosses a small channel in Stanpit Marsh, is thought to have been part of the route smugglers used to move goods in and out of the area.
Even the old tobacco factory nearby is said to have received deliveries under the cover of darkness.
So next time you’re having a pint in the Ship… chances are the place has seen a lot more interesting business over the years.

The Nelson Tavern, Mudeford
The Nelson Tavern sits just a short walk from Mudeford Quay, and it’s another solid choice if you’re looking for a proper pub after a wander around the harbour.
Inside you’ll find a relaxed country-pub atmosphere, with a good mix of locals, walkers and people stopping in after a day by the water.
Food is a big draw here too. The menu leans towards classic pub favourites but with a bit of a twist — things like slow-cooked Dorset pork belly or pan-fried sea bass alongside the usual burgers and comfort food.
The Nelson also runs regular themed food nights, where the menu changes to different cuisines from around the world, which keeps things interesting if you visit more than once.
If you’re around on a Sunday, this is also a great spot for a proper roast.
And yes… the crackling really is as good as people say.

The Haven House Inn, Mudeford Quay
The Haven House Inn sits right on Mudeford Quay, and it’s easily one of the best spots in the area if you fancy a pint with a view.
In the summer, especially, this place gets busy. There are loads of outdoor seating looking straight across the harbour, which makes it a great place to sit back with a cold drink and watch the boats coming and going.
It’s a very different vibe to the Ship in Distress — a bit more open, a bit more seaside, and usually buzzing when the weather’s good.
If you’re spending the afternoon around Mudeford Quay this is one of the easiest places to stop off for a drink.

The Sandpiper, Mudeford
The Sandpiper is a Greene King pub, so you’ll find the usual range of pub classics on the menu along with regular midweek deals and offers.
One of the best things about the Sandpiper is the large covered outdoor area, which makes it a great spot for families or anyone wanting to enjoy a drink outside during the warmer months.
If you’re into your darts, this pub is definitely worth checking out. They’ve recently installed four Omni dart boards and regularly host competitions and leagues.
If you’re visiting Mudeford with kids or just want somewhere relaxed and easygoing, this is a solid option.
And we’re not going to lie… we’re quite partial to the sharing dishes on the menu.

The Rising Sun, Purewell
The Rising Sun sits just outside Stanpit in nearby Purewell, but it’s close enough that it definitely deserves a place on this list.
It’s a popular spot with both locals and visitors thanks to its Thai gastro-style menu, which makes it a bit different from the traditional pub food you’ll find elsewhere nearby.
Inside, the pub keeps that classic old-school cosy feel, while outside they’ve created a much more modern seating area that’s great during the warmer months.
It’s a really nice mix of traditional pub atmosphere with something a little different on the food front.
One thing worth noting — children under five aren’t allowed inside, so keep that in mind if you’re visiting as a family.

Looking for the Best Fish and Chips in Mudeford & Stanpit?
After an afternoon of wandering around the marsh, admiring the views and enjoying a pint or two… chances are you’ll be craving some proper fish and chips.
Just a short walk from The Ship in Distress and The Nelson Tavern, you’ll find Alexander’s, one of the best fish and chip shops in the area.
And yes — there’s usually a queue.
Pretty much all year round.
So be prepared to wait a bit, sometimes up to twenty minutes. But honestly… it’s worth it.
Once you’ve got your fish and chips, take them down to Stanpit Marsh or the harbour and watch the sunset.
Fish and chips with a Dorset sunset in front of you?
Hard to beat.
