Pub Lunch & Pint – £9.99

Travelling in the UK?

It’s not just the trains that’ll rinse your wallet — eating out can quietly do the same.

One minute it’s a “quick bite”… next minute you’re £20 down and still eyeing up a Greggs on the way back.

But don’t worry — you don’t need to splash out to eat well… or at least well enough.

There are loads of ways to keep costs down without living off meal deals. From pub offers and chain discounts to apps, supermarkets, and a few cheeky local tricks — you’ve got options.

This isn’t about fine dining or chasing “hidden gems” that take three buses and a hike to reach.

This is about eating smart, spending less, and still enjoying your trip.

Ready to take on the UK food scene without getting mugged off?

Let’s tuck in.

Firstly: Save Your ‘Best Options’ for the Weekend

If you can, save your “proper” meals or nicer restaurants for the weekend.

That’s usually when places are busiest, the atmosphere’s better, and it actually feels worth the spend.

Midweek? Different story.

This is where you want to be a bit smarter with your money.

A lot of mid-range chains and pubs run solid deals Monday–Thursday — we’re talking 2-for-1 mains, fixed menus, and decent discounts that can cut your bill in half.

Higher-end restaurants? Don’t bank on it.

They rarely need to offer deals, especially in busy areas.

So unless you’ve found a specific midweek offer or you’re trying to beat the weekend rush with a booking, it’s usually better to save your splurge and make it count.

Midweek is for value.
Weekend is for vibes.

We might moan about it here, but it’s pretty special

Toby Carvery:

Toby Carvery… the self-proclaimed “home of the roast.”

And to be fair — for the price, it’s hard to argue.

During the week, you can bag a roast dinner with a choice of three or four meats from around £7–£8. Even better, all your trimmings and sauces are unlimited, so you can pile it high and go back for more.

Breakfast’s a winner too — an all-you-can-eat for roughly £6–£7, with unlimited bacon, sausages, and all the usual bits.

For what you’re paying, it’s actually decent. Worth it for the cauliflower cheese alone… and that questionable curry thing they sneak onto the breakfast spread.

Good to Know

You can ask for more than one meat — and you should.

Turkey and gammon is a solid combo. Feeling bold? Add pork into the mix.

Just know the more meats you pick, the smaller each portion gets — they’re not daft.

And if you want a proper insider move…

Watch the dads.

They’ve got this down to an art form.

They’ll ask for gammon… wait for the plate… then casually drop:

“Oh, go on then… bit of pork as well.”

Masterclass.

Beefeater:

Beefeater is one of the better chain options if you want something a bit more solid than your standard cheap eat.

The burgers, mixed grills, and ribs all do the job — nothing fancy, but reliable and filling.

Where it really wins though? The offers.

You’ll want to sign up to their mailing list, as they regularly send out deals like:

  • 40–50% off food
  • 2-for-1 mains

And they come round pretty often, so it’s worth it.

Breakfast

Their breakfast is decent, but a step up in price compared to Toby — usually around £10–£11.

That said, you do get more included:

  • Unlimited cooked breakfast
  • Continental options
  • Juices and hot drinks

Plus, a solid bonus — up to two kids eat free with one paying adult.

Worth It?

If you’ve got a discount code — 100%.

Without one, it’s still alright… just not as much of a no-brainer.

Beefeater 40% off

Harvester

Harvester’s biggest selling point?

The unlimited salad bar.

And let’s be honest… it’s not really about the salad, is it?

It’s the bread rolls, pasta, sauces, and piling your plate up like you’ve not eaten in days.

From fresh bits to crispy bacon toppings and unlimited refills, it’s basically a rite of passage to fill up before your actual meal even arrives.

And yeah… it happens.

You go in thinking you’ll pace yourself, then suddenly you’re halfway through your main and already defeated.

The tomato & herb pasta? Dangerous.

Worth It?

Harvester’s a solid option if you want something casual, filling, and decent value — especially if you make the most of the salad bar.

They also run offers if you sign up, so it’s worth checking before you go.

Supermarkets

Don’t overlook supermarkets — they’re an easy win when you want something cheap, quick, and no hassle.

Not a supermarket, but Ikea also do a breakfast for £1.

Yeah, a quid.

Big names like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons often have cafés inside, serving up simple meals like all-day breakfasts, fish & chips, and basic hot food at decent prices.

You’re typically looking at:

  • Around £5–£6 for a basic breakfast (Sainsbury’s)
  • Around £7–£8 for a bigger “ultimate” breakfast (Morrisons)

Nothing fancy… but it does the job.

Just keep in mind — not every store has a café. It depends on the size and location.

Hot Food Counters

Supermarket hot counters used to be a bit of a hidden gem…

Now? Not so much.

You’re often paying £3–£4 for something that’s been sat there drying out for hours. At that point, you’re usually better off spending the same elsewhere and getting something fresher.

And yeah… the wings have fallen off a cliff.

Good to Know

If you’re planning to use supermarkets regularly, get yourself a loyalty card:

  • Tesco Clubcard
  • Nectar (Sainsbury’s)

Without one, you’ll get absolutely stung on certain items.

Pub Grub: 2-for-1s, Curry Nights & Proper Fillers

Pubs — both chains and independents — are always looking to get people through the door.

And that’s good news for you.

To tempt punters in, loads of places run deals like:

  • 2-for-1 mains
  • Curry nights
  • Burger & drink deals

Usually during the week, and often at genuinely decent prices.

It’s not guaranteed everywhere, so don’t just rock up and hope for the best.

The easiest way?

Search pubs near where you’re staying on Google Maps, then have a quick look at their website or socials. Most will shout about their offers if they’ve got them.

Worth It?

For a decent, filling meal with a bit of atmosphere, pub grub is one of your best bets in the UK.

You can get some awesome food and deals.
You can also get some shit ones.

One of our favourites is at our local haunt – The Ship in Distress in Dorset. You can grab a decent lunch + a pint for £9.99 Monday to Friday. Want to know more? check out our guide here – Is this the best Pub Lunch Deal in Christchurch?

When pints are creeping up to nearly £7, this is a cracking deal!

Wetherspoons – Cultural Landmark of the United Kingdom

Wetherspoons gets a lot of stick…

But snobbery aside — it does exactly what you need it to do.

Cheap food. Cheap pints. Everywhere.

You’ll struggle to find a pint under £2–£3 anywhere else in the UK, especially in tourist areas. And when you’re trying to keep costs down, that makes a big difference.

The food?

Let’s not pretend it’s gourmet.

But you can also pay a lot more elsewhere and get something just as average — if not worse.

It’s cheap, cheerful, and consistent.

And sometimes, that’s all you want.

A burger, chips, and a pint for under a tenner? Still very much doable here.

Especially after a few drinks when standards have… relaxed slightly.

Worth It?

If you’re on a budget — absolutely.

If you’re after a “nice meal”… probably not.

But for what it is, it delivers.

You can’t really argue with that!

Fast Food Options

Even us locals hit fast food more than we’d like to admit.

No judgement here.

It’s quick, easy, and pretty much everywhere — perfect when you just need something to fill the gap without spending a fortune.

But here’s the catch…

If you’re paying menu price, you’re doing it wrong.

Most of the big chains run their best deals through their apps, and the difference can be ridiculous:

  • Chicken Royale Meal: ~£9.99 → ~£5.99 on the app
  • Big Mac Meal: ~£6.69 → ~£2.99 with a voucher

Same food. Half the price.

The Reality

You’ll need to download the apps or sign up — that’s just how it works now.

(Data is the new oil… and suddenly Nando’s isn’t so cheeky anymore.)

If you don’t want your inbox full of nonsense, just use a throwaway email and crack on.

Local Takeaways

Independents can be even better value, especially midweek.

You’ll often see:

  • BOGOF pizzas
  • Meal deals in the window
  • Cash-only discounts

Proper old-school stuff.

And yeah… don’t be surprised if:

“Card machine’s broken, boss.”

Other Options & The McDonald’s Hack That’s Not A Hack

A few quick hitters worth knowing when you’re trying to keep costs down:

  • Slim Chickens – worth it for the ranch alone
  • Greggs – still decent, but creeping up in price
  • KFC – alright… with the app

But the real winner?

The McDonald’s Hack 🍟

If you know, you know.

You can get a burger (or sandwich) + medium fries for £2.99 — and it’s easier than you think:

1. Buy any item (even just a coffee) to get a receipt
2. Fill out the quick survey using the receipt details (takes 2 mins)
3. You’ll get a code via email
4. Use that code to grab your £2.99 meal

And the best bit?

You’ll get another receipt with a new code… so the cycle continues.

One Important Tip

Don’t order through your phone.

You won’t get a proper receipt with the code.

Use the in-store machines or order at the counter — some places also have QR codes you can scan.

Too Good To Go: Budget Travel Saviour

If you’re travelling on a budget, this app is an absolute winner.

Too Good To Go lets restaurants, supermarkets, and takeaways sell off surplus food at heavily reduced prices — usually at the end of the day.

We’re talking proper bargains.

It’s not unusual to see people bag:

  • A big box of Chinese for a few quid
  • Fresh bakery goods
  • Leftover restaurant meals

All for £2–£4.

The Catch?

You don’t get to choose what you’re getting.

It’s a bit of a lucky dip — you’re taking whatever they’ve got left.

But that’s part of the fun.

And when it pays off… it really pays off.

Worth It?

100%.

The busier the area you’re staying in, the better your chances of landing something decent — more options, more drops, more luck.

If you’re flexible and not fussy, this can save you a serious amount over a few days.

Fish & Chips

Chippies have taken a bit of a battering lately… and not the good kind.

Between COVID, rising costs, and the price of fish and oil going through the roof, a lot of them have struggled. Prices have gone up, and unfortunately, quality’s been a bit hit and miss in places.

It’s a shame — because a proper chippy used to be one of the best value meals going.

These days, it’s more of a treat than a cheap go-to.

Worth It?

Still — when you find a good one, it hits.

Crispy batter, fluffy chips, loads of salt & vinegar… you can’t beat it.

And they do need the support, to be fair.

Chippy Tips

  • Try a battered sausage (elite tier)
  • Curry sauce for dipping your chips = non-negotiable
  • In Birmingham / the Black Country? Orange chips are a must

Feeling brave?

  • Battered Mars bar
  • Or even a battered mince pie

No judgement.

One Thing to Watch

There are a lot of average (or straight-up bad) chippies out there now.

Best bet?

Ask a local — most of us love a good chippy recommendation.

Or check reviews… just make sure they’re recent.

Delivery Apps (Uber Eats, Deliveroo & Just Eat)

These used to be a bit of a cheat code.

Discounts flying in, money-off vouchers, “£10 off your next order” popping up every other week…

Now?

Not so much.

The Reality

Even with the discounts, it often still works out more expensive than just going direct or picking it up yourself.

Why?

  • Inflated menu prices
  • Service fees
  • Delivery fees
  • Small order charges

By the time you’ve checked out, that “40% off” doesn’t feel like much of a win.

Some restaurants even bump their prices on these apps compared to in-store — so you’re not really saving anything.

Worth It?

Honestly… not really anymore.

They’re convenient, yeah — especially after a long day when you can’t be bothered to move.

But as a budget travel tip?

You’re usually better off:

  • Walking to the place
  • Ordering direct
  • Or grabbing something locally

When It Does Make Sense

If you land a genuinely good offer and the restaurant or shop hasn’t hiked their prices — then fair play.

You can find some items that are the same price as those in-store.

But those days are getting rarer.

Feels like the golden era of delivery apps is on the way out.

Plate of Chinese take away food in the UK
The cheeky chinese

The Cheeky Chinese

The hero. The icon. The staple.

A cheeky Chinese.

It’s basically part of UK culture at this point.

But… it will hurt your wallet — so you’re going to have to dig out that YOLO attitude for this one.

Multiple dishes? Absolutely.
Curry sauce? Non-negotiable.
Shredded chicken? God’s gift.

A few personal favourites

  • Satay chicken (on skewers)
  • Sweet & Sour chicken, Hong Kong style
  • Crispy shredded chicken or beef
  • Chicken Balls (you don’t order without these)
  • Chicken in a black bean sauce

The Reality

Chinese takeaway isn’t as cheap as it used to be.

Ordering a few bits individually can rack up fast — and before you know it, you’re £50+ deep wondering how it happened.

The Move

Look for set meals.

Most places offer deals for 1 or 2 people, and this is where you’ll actually get some value.

A typical example:

  • Chicken balls
  • Chow mein
  • Egg fried rice

Usually around £7–£10 for one — and it’s more than enough.

Better yet, most places are happy to swap bits around if you ask.

Munch Boxes

You’ll also see munch boxes popping up more now (big up the north for this one).

Basically a mix of everything chucked into a pizza box.

Chaotic. Greasy. Elite.

Perfect if you want a bit of everything — or you’re sharing.

Worth It?

Without a doubt.

It’s bucket-list stuff.

Wowcher & Voucher Sites

Before you book anything — food, activities, or even a “treat yourself” moment — it’s worth a quick check on sites like Wowcher.

You can often find:

  • 40–50% off restaurant deals
  • Afternoon teas
  • Spa days
  • The occasional “this feels way fancier than it should for the price” meal

It’s not something you’ll use every day, but when it lines up, it can turn a splurge into something a bit more reasonable.

Worth a 30-second check before committing anywhere.

Final Thoughts

Unless you’ve got deep pockets, you’ll probably end up leaning on a few of these.

The UK isn’t cheap — and eating out can catch you out fast if you’re not paying attention.

Your best bets?

  • Pub deals & midweek offers
  • Chains with discounts (Toby, Beefeater, Harvester)
  • Apps like Too Good To Go
  • The occasional fast food hack when needed

Save your money where you can… and spend it where it actually counts.

Because let’s be honest — you’re not coming to the UK for a £14 burger and a warm pint.

You’re here for the experience.

And if you can eat well without getting rinsed in the process?

Even better.

If this post saved you or helped you book smarter, that’s a massive win for us.

If you fancy supporting what we do, you can grab us a beer below. It genuinely keeps the site running (and funds the holiday hunting).

No pressure. Just good vibes.
